CORE SKILLS
FOR COACHING:
ACADEMIC MEDICAL CENTERS

As a leader in an Academic Medical Center, you have invested years of training in your area of expertise. Now that you’re in a leadership role, different skills are required for success. Core Skills for Coaching: Academic Medical Centers expands the leadership skillset and impact of Academic Medical Center leaders.

THE
“LEADER AS A COACH”
DIFFERENCE

When Academic Medical Center leaders develop and implement coaching skills like mindfulness, listening, and curiosity, they elevate the engagement and performance of their team members. Participants transition from the leader with all the answers to the leader who empowers others to find the answers. This creates more trusting relationships, higher levels of innovation and creativity, improved patient care practices, and better bench strength within their team.

The insights gained and the people I met during this program were extraordinary. I was taught tangible skills to develop my colleagues, partners, and trainees. I connected with an exceptional and diverse group of people from medical institutions around the US and was made better from their experiences and interactions. The mindful approach to coaching through the Spiro model resonated with my approach to life and medicine – I am a better physician, leader, and person for participating in this program!

CORE SKILLS FOR COACHING:

ACADEMIC MEDICAL CENTERS is a unique, evidence-based, online program that provides an introduction to coaching with a focus on leadership application in Academic Medical Center settings. Participants develop their skills through synchronous and asynchronous learning, hands-on practice, large and small group activities, reflection, and reading.

The program is centered around a simple yet effective coaching model that participants can easily remember. Participants spend a significant amount of time working in small, mentor coach-facilitated groups practicing coaching skills to ensure they can apply new skills in their work. Mentor coaches provide specific feedback to expand participants’ coaching acumen. Additionally, participants work one-on-one with their mentor coach to focus on their personal coach development needs.

KEY COMPONENTS OF THE ACADEMY INCLUDE:

  • Research evidence demonstrating the positive effects of coaching.
  • The application of coaching within academic medical centers.
  • The coaching mindset: what it is and when to apply it.
  • Foundational coaching skills: establishing trust, listening, asking questions, creating awareness, designing actions, planning and goal setting.
  • Coaching through the lens of equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Presence and its application to coaching.

IN THIS PROGRAM,
